Illusions of Grandeur

Screen Shot 2013-06-13 at 8.55.19 AMAntique ruins, a striped-silk canopy, a colonnade and moldings… the trompe-l’oeil decor in Roberto Peregalli’s Milan apartment acknowledges the personal influence of Renzo Mongiardino, a decorator with a passion for nostalgic style. Combining with Roman statuary, architectural models and theological pictures, the paint work adds another layer of theatricality to an interior already richly suggestive of past lives. AX48AY21

Portrait Of An Easel

staffelei_1    The repeatedly employed motif of the easel, a requisite of the traditional painter, delivers the beholder into the intimate atmosphere of the artist’s studio. The room is as though abandoned. Only the massive wooden framework, supporting paintings in progress which refuse to reveal their secrets, points toward the presence of the artist.

staffelei_2 Nikolai Makarov is a russian born artist and photographer. Nikolai  grew up in Moscow and attended Institute of Foreign Languages earning a Bachelors in Fine Art. He then went on to work in studios and art houses until making his move to Berlin in 1975. After moving to the art center of Germany he studied at Humboldt University.  Then finally attended Academy of Arts, where he was a  student of Werner Kiemke, Berlin,  and Rudolf Hausner, Vienna. staffelei_3 Nikaloi has exhibited around the world from New York to Napoli displaying his unique style of portraits and still life.

FIlm Art History

Screen Shot 2013-06-06 at 8.04.54 AMElle Decoration suggests two films this summer to watch for the art historian in you. The first is  Summer In February which opens June 14th is a true story of a love triangle in an Edwardian artist colony between painters Alfred James Munnings,  Florence Carter-Wood and Gilbert Evans. The second film is Renoir out June 28th, a film about the complex relationship between Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, his muse and his son Jean, who would later become a famous film director.

Unconsidered Trifles

Screen Shot 2013-05-21 at 9.11.27 AMRoland Collins has been painting his entire life. He won his first art award at the age of 7 – “Ten bob” for coloring in pictures in the Evening News. The things he paints are like the things he collects: unconsidered trifles that no-one else snaps up.

The Lord Of The Manner

Screen Shot 2013-05-21 at 9.04.32 AMIn 1910 Giuseppe Visconti turned his family’s ruined castle in Emilia-Romagna into a hothouse of Arts and Crafts activity – and he tackled the reconstruction very much in the style of a Renaissance Prince. He would employ artisans who lived in a Medieval Revival village he built-in the shadow of the fortress. In more ways than one, Marie-France Boyer is reminded of The Leopard…

Grazzano reminds you of a child’s love drawing of a monumental castle – square and with a tower at each corner. Bit on the other side of its pointed – arched doorway, the highly sophisticated courtyard might just as easily serve as the backdrop to a quattrocento Madonna. Giusppe inherited a one of a kind ruin. But he had passion for craftsmanship and, in a pure Arts and Crafts – style reaction to rampant industrialization, subscribed to the fashion for reviewing past skills. So around the main building, he built a whole Medieval village in which he housed around a hundred families with wrought iron craftsman and joiners in the main who he required to wear period style clothing. A castle rebuilt with true Renaissance tradition.

Day One Of Legends 2013

Hollywood Reporter reviews Legends 2013 by La Cienega Design Quarter and the amazing parties and discussions on design and trends. LCDQ La Cienega Design Quarter Legends 2013 Time Capsule Gala

When the doors opened for the first La Cienega Design Quarter event on Thursday — the blogger breakfast at antiquarian Lee Stanton’s Los Angeles shop — there was already a long line to get in. “It’s a wonderful way to start off a day packed with informative and exciting events,” noted Elaine Maltzman, director of marketing for top L.A. designerTimothy Corrigan. One of the event’s social media ambassadors, designer Alissa Swedlow of The Good Designs, remarked that the turnout showed how important social media has become: “My last client didn’t ask for references; she looked at my Pinterest and that’s really what said, ‘This is the right designer for me.’”

The day ended as it had begun, with designers including Jane Hallworth (who has designed forMichelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst), Trip HaenischJeff Andrews and Tamara Kaye-Honey crowded into Stanton’s courtyard, braving the occasional sprinkle of rain to eat, drink and mingle with “five hundred of my closest friends” noted designer Christian May, who also authors the popular blog Maison 21 and is joining Friday’s panel at Gina Berschneider, Inc. titled “The Go Go Years and Beyond: Re-creating Upholstery from Earlier Eras.”
